Volumetric Weight
Dimensional weight (also called volumetric weight) is a pricing technique used by courier companies. It calculates shipping cost based on the package size rather than actual weight.
DHL / FedEx / UPS Formula:
Length × Width × Height ÷ 5000
Couriers charge based on whichever is higher - actual weight or volumetric weight. This is called "Chargeable Weight".

The standard formula used globally for express air courier shipments is built on the assumption that a package's volume is directly related to the space it occupies in the aircraft cargo hold.
Length (cm) × Width (cm) × Height (cm) ÷ 5000
For multiple boxes in a single shipment, calculate the volumetric weight for each box individually and sum them up to get the total volumetric weight of the consignment.
Express air couriers invoice based on Chargeable Weight. This is the greater value between the actual physical weight on a scale and the calculated volumetric weight.
*Note: Most major express couriers round up the chargeable weight to the next 0.5 kg (e.g., a package of 7.2 kg is rounded up and billed at 7.5 kg).
💡 Optimization Tip: The shipper paid for 2.5 kg of "empty space". Packing more items into the existing volume would make the actual weight closer to 7.2 kg, maximizing shipping value.

When shipping clothes, jackets, or linen (especially for excess student baggage to USA/UK), use vacuum seal bags. These remove excess air, reducing package volume by up to 50% and dramatically slashing volumetric shipping charges.
Ensure your box is completely flat and has no outward bulges. Carriers measure the box at its widest bulging point. A minor 2 cm bulge on all sides of a standard 40x40x40 box can increase volumetric weight by 3 kg.

Yes, any material wrapped around the exterior of the box that increases the overall dimension by even half a centimeter will be included in the laser-scanning measurements at express courier sorting hubs.
