Norway's gift relief is far more generous than the EU's and works differently: NOK 1,000 per recipient rather than per parcel, free of duty and tax, sent from a private individual abroad to a private individual in Norway. One shipment can carry a NOK 1,000 gift for each of several family members, provided every gift is clearly marked to the named person both on the outside of the box and in the transport documents. That marking is the whole trick, and it is where most parcels lose the relief.

Norway is in the EEA but outside the EU customs union, so every parcel from Hyderabad is a full third-country import with its own Norwegian declaration. The old NOK 350 exemption is gone: since 1 January 2024 goods outside the VOEC scheme must be declared from the first krone. VOEC itself is a seller-side scheme for registered online shops — a personal parcel cannot use it, so gift relief is the route that matters.

The clearance fee is charged by the carrier, not by Customs, and is paid by the person receiving the parcel on top of the shipping already paid. Posten's published rates for private customers run from NOK 46 on low-value goods to NOK 278 on anything carrying restrictions, at any value — which on a small food parcel can approach the value of the contents.
